Hi everyone, welcome to another Insider Yacht review. This is the brief roundup as always of the three boats that we have for you this week. This week we have something a little different, rather than just going through the boats that are ready to go and the best boats on the market, this time I’ve decided to go for yachts that are prime candidates for doing a refit on. Let’s go and take a look.
Cedar Island The first one that I have up here is called Cedar Island. She is a a broad launched in 1994. She did have a refit done in 2006 and since then she’s been used by the same owners and has been very, very well taken care of. Now this one out of the three is the one that I would say needs the least amount of work. It’s been very, very well maintained, has a great captain onboard that does a lot of the mechanical work and all of the scheduled of maintenance that he can’t do he subs out to the contractors locally here in Fort Lauderdale. He spends a lot of time here in Forth Lauderdale.
The main thing that needs to be done to this boat is the interior, it’s sort of soft goods furnishings. It just needs a breath of fresh air put in onto the interior. It’s in fantastic condition but it needs a little bit of modernizing. The other thing with the boat is the teak. The teak in a few areas is getting a little thin and could definitely use some TLC. Looking at the specs here it’s 110 feet long, the beam is right on 20 feet, the draft it doesn’t say it there but it is six foot draft. For the size of the boat that’s all fairly standard, is aluminum hull and super structure so you’re not going to get some of the light and shallow drafts that you’d see on some of the Lazzaras for example which are the fiberglass boats.
A great speed out of 18 knots cruising, 26 knots maximum. As I said she was built in 1994, has the refit in 2006. In 2006, she had a full paint job from top to bottom so it’s the same paint that’s on there now from the job that was done in 2006. She sleeps eight guests in four staterooms and they have separate crew accommodations as well. She’s a great candidate, very, very clean boat. It has a nice F cockpit and F deck to it, perfect for watersports and things. This is a very easy refit to do; teak, paint, and sort of refresh the interior. A nice easy one to start off with.
Watercolours Second is Watercolours and this is a Trinity. She has a very colorful past. Launched in 1991, she was actually purchased back by Trinity in 2003 and was owned by the owners of Trinity Yachts for the next five or six years. When they first got her they did a huge refit over the period from 2003 to 2008. She had a completely new interior, had the whole main deck stripped back, a new country kitchen style fitted up forward which used to be a formal dinning room and a crew mess. Now she’s starting to look a little bit tired, definitely is in need of a good refit.
Again, mechanically she’s pretty sound. She’s had a lot of work done to the air conditioning recently, the generator’s mains have been serviced but definitely needs a paint job, a bit of TLC to the sun deck. Looking through the specs here she’s 115 feet long, 24 1/2 foot beam which is pretty beamy for this length. The draft I need to double check, I’m pretty sure it’s six and a half feet but I’ll have to get confirmation on that and I’ll detail it in the full review which is down below. Aluminum hull, super structure, 15 knots cruising, 17 knots is the top speed, and she sits here in Dania Beach which is in Fort Lauderdale.
Eight guests in four staterooms and separate crew area as well. The interior is a really, really nice interior that’s on here. It’s all teak and holly, lots of mahogany woods and playing with different tones in satin and gloss finishes, really beautiful interior. It does need some TLC around the paint and the ceilings around the window frames and some attention on top. We’ll go through all that on the full review which is just down believe.
Montana Moon Last up today is a boat that’s had another sort of color past is Montana Moon. She’s a Hatteras launched in 1995. This is actually the only five state room Hatteras that has this F fishing cockpit to it so she’s really one of a kind. A little bit different, she has three main engines in her which increases the cruising speed up to 20 knots. Actually, the closest matched boat to this is this Fire and Aunty which is a Hatteras. I believe she was launched in 2007, only four staterooms and she doesn’t have this F cockpit here like you see on that photograph there.
Looking through the specs, 118 foot long, 23 foot 10 inches is the beam, and a 6 1/2 foot draft. Now she is fiberglass unlike the other two that were aluminum. She’s fiberglass hull and super structure. Cruising speed is 17 knots and maximum speed is 20 knots. She’s up in Beaufort, North Carolina. She’s actually out of the water now, she has been out of the water for some time. The last sort of trip she did was from New Bern down to Beaufort and they did a lot of mechanical tests and some surveys along the way. She surveyed very, very well but unfortunately with the exiting owner the funds aren’t there to complete the refit that she really needs.
On the interior it is very clean, all the photographs in the review that we’ll do were from back in 2009 when the issues started with the funding for the refit period. She is pretty clean on the interior, there are a couple of areas. There’s one wall that I know that the veneer has come off from an AC leak. That leak has since been fixed but the cosmetics to the wall still needs to be addressed. It needs full paint and is a good candidate for adding a section to that second deck there, the upper deck which will give you either a sky lounge or it will give you a sixth cabin and it will also add a lot of real estate to that sun deck that’s up there.
This is a tri-decker. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get something, put your own touch to the interior, and also add a lot of volume to the boat. It’s a really, really nice option here. As I said it’s the only one with this fishing cockpit at the back as well, which is great. It also has a bit of a swim platform there for water sports and things. Mechanically and structurally she’s sound, I’ve been told by different surveyors that have been involved with this along with way that there’s no delaminating issues with the hull but she does need a paint job and does need some attention to the interior.
